TONY JONES: ... You deliberately did not use the term genocide, which was used in the 'Bringing Them Home Report' [about the Stolen generations ripped from their mothers] , why was that?
KEVIN RUDD: The term has a specific definition in international law and I don't believe is either appropriate or helpful in describing the event as they occurred or taking in taking the country forward.
TONY JONES: You say that up to 50,000 children were forcibly removed as the product of the deliberate calculated policies of the State. Were those policies racist? Because that's another term you didn't use?
KEVIN RUDD: I've said elsewhere in the speech I believe there were decisions taken by previous governments about generic removal, and I think I may have used the term on racial grounds ...
