Gaza missiles homicide rate equals that by raped Wives

"Scheherazade" by Gideon Polya

advertisement

The State of Israel Israel claims that its bombing is in retaliation for Gaza missile attacks - but the annual homicide rate per million from Gaza missiles (0.5) equals that by raped and beaten wives (0.5-1.0).

I have illustrated this article by my HUGE painting "Scheherazade" (for an EXPANDABLE IMAGE and detailed discussion see "War on Women & Women's Rights. "Scheherazade" painting, Heroines": http://mwcnews.net/content/view/16294/42/ ).

This Israeli "Gaza missiles excuse" when analysed quantitatively strains credulity. Thus Professor Marjorie Cohn (outstanding anti-racist, humanitarian US law professor at Thomas Jefferson School of Law and the President of the US National Lawyers Guild) has cogently analysed and condemned the war criminal nature of Israeli Gaza massacre, observing that "The targeting of civilians violates the Fourth Geneva Convention. Since the rockets fired from Gaza into Israel cannot distinguish between civilians and military targets, they are illegal. But Israel's air and ground attack in Gaza violates Geneva in four ways. First, it constitutes collective punishment of the entire population in Gaza for the acts of a few militants. Second, it targets civilians, as evidenced by the large numbers of civilian casualties. Third, it is a disproportionate response to the rockets fired into Israel. Fourth, an occupying power has an obligation to ensure food and medical supplies to the occupied population; Israel's blockade has created a humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Israel's airstrikes and ground assault on the people of Gaza have little to do with the Gazan rockets, which hadn't killed any Israelis for a year before Israel's current military operation. Israel's leaders are bombing and attacking Gaza in order to gain an advantage in the upcoming Israeli elections in February" (see "Israel's collective punishment of Gaza": http://mwcnews.net/content/view/27707/42/ ).

A detailed analysis of the Gaza conflict from the perspective of "reprisals death ratios" reveals that in the current Gaza conflict, the DEATH RATIO of "Palestinians violently killed by Israelis"/ "Israeli deaths from Gaza missiles" = 810/4 = 203 and the DEATH RATIO of "Palestinians violently killed by Israelis"/ "Israeli deaths by Palestinians" = 810/6 = 135.

However avoidable deaths (excess deaths, deaths that otherwise did not have to happen) can be either violent (from bombs or bullets) or non-violent deaths from deprivation (e.g. deaths due war criminal Israeli blockade of food and medicine and destruction of life-saving infrastructure in the Gaza Concentration Camp).

Accordingly, in the current conflict the DEATH RATIO of "total violent and non-violent excess Palestinian deaths from Israelis"/"Israeli deaths from Gaza missiles" = 974/4 = 244 (lower estimate) to 1,620/4 = 405 (upper estimate) and the DEATH RATIO of "total Palestinian deaths from Israelis"/"Israeli deaths" = 974/6 = 162 (lower estimate) to 1,620/6 = 270 (upper estimate).

By way of comparison, on 23 March 1944 Adolph Hitler ordered a reprisals "death ratio" of 10 in response the killing of 33 Germans in Rome by Italian Partisans. The war criminal order was carried out on 24 March 1944 with the Nazi German execution of 335 Italian men and boys in the Ardeatine Caves Massacre (335/33 = 10) (see "Ardeatine Massacre": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ardeatine_massacre ).

We can see that these various estimates of "Palestine/Israeli DEATH RATIOS in the current Gaza Massacre range from 14-27 TIMES GREATER the death ratio ordered by Adolph Hitler and executed in Rome, 1944. For a very detailed Palestinian/Israeli DEATH RATIO analysis covering the present conflict, the Second Intifada (September 2000 – January 2009) and the whole post-1967 Occupation era (1967-2009) see "Palestinian-Israeli death ratios. Nazi-style Israeli Gaza war crimes": http://mwcnews.net/content/view/27795/42/ ).

However there is another way of assessing the carnage in the continuing Apartheid Israel Gaza Massacre. Thus the 21st century "annual homicide rate" in "deaths per million of population" is 0.5 (Israelis from Gaza missiles), 15 (Israelis by Israelis), 56 (Americans), 100 (Americans by guns), 164 (Palestinians killed violently by Israelis), 200 (African-Americans), 473 (Citizens of Detroit, Michigan, USA), 902 (Palestinian non-violent deaths through war criminal, Geneva Convention-violating Israeli-imposed deprivation) and 1,066 ( Palestinian violent deaths plus non-violent deaths from Israeli-imposed deprivation).

Should the US Air Force bomb African-American suburbs of Detroit with high explosives, cluster bombs and phosphorus because the Detroit "annual homicide rate" is about 1,000 TIMES GREATER than the "annual homicide rate" of Israelis from Gaza missiles?

Further comparisons are with "avoidable deaths" commonly encountered in civil society. Thus the 21st century "annual death rate" in "deaths per million of population" is 0.5 (Israelis from Gaza missiles) as compared to that in Western countries (including Apartheid Israel) of about 10 (death by an acquaintance or relative), 100 (motor accidents), 1,000 (tobacco smoking).

Should the Western MILITARY be violently and mass murderously deployed against domestic murderers, drink drivers or tobacconists?

A very pertinent comparison is between Israeli deaths from Gaza missiles fired by ABUSIVELY IMPRISONED OCCUPIED PALESTINIANS and deaths of abusive male partners at the hands of BATTERED AND RAPED WIVES, as outlined below.

Violence to women and children - including sexual abuse - is endemic in Anglo countries such as the United States and White Australia. Thus the recent Australian Report "Little Children are Sacred" refers to studies in America indicating that 25% (ONE QUARTER) of females and 10% of males experience childhood sexual abuse (Finkelhor, D. (1994), Current information on the scope and nature of child sexual abuse", Future of Children, 4(2), pp31-53).

The Report also quotes an Australian study indicating that 34% (ONE THIRD) of females and 16% of males experienced non-penetrative abuse with 12% females and 4% of males reporting penetrative child sexual abuse (Dunne, M.P., Purdie, D.M., Cook, M.D., Boyle, F.M. & Najman, J.M.(2003), Is child sexual abuse declining? Evidence from a population-based survey of men and women in Australia, Child Abuse & Neglect, vol. 27 (2), pp141-152) (see: "Aboriginal Genocide. Racist White Australian child abuse and passive mass murder": http://mwcnews.net/content/view/15140/42/ .

This horrendous violence towards defenceless children in the US and White Australia continues towards ADULT females.

Thus there is an epidemic of violence towards women in both of these war criminal countries with a culture of abuse of women at home and horrendous, genocidal abuse of Indigenous Subject women abroad. Thus the US National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) estimates that 1in 4 women experience domestic violence in their lifetime and that 1.3 million women are subject to domestic violence each year (see: http://www.ncadv.org/files/DomesticViolenceFactSheet(National).pdf ).

However the ultimate in abuse of women is the killing or avoidable death of their CHILDREN. Thus 20,000 under-5 year old American infants die avoidably in the US EACH year due to Bush-ite and Zionist promotion of expenditure on killing Muslims rather than saving American infant lives (see "How Bush killed 100,000 American infants [update: 160,000, 2001-2009]: http://mwcnews.net/content/view/7102/26/ ).

However it is in the American Empire that the passive mass murder of infants reaches horrendous numbers. Post-invasion under-5 infant deaths in the Occupied Palestinian, Iraqi and Afghan territories total 0.2 million, 0.6 million and 2.1 million, respectively (see "9-11 excuse for US global genocide. The real 9-11 atrocity: millions dead (9-11 million) in Bush Wars (1990-2008)": http://mwcnews.net/content/view/25184/42/ ).

Indeed from UN Population Division and UNICEF data, the "annual death rate" is 1.6% for Occupied Palestinian Territory under-5 year old infants (3,000 deaths annually, 187,000 under-5 year old infants), 2.5% for Occupied Iraqi under-5 year old infants and 6.3% for under-5 year old Occupied Afghanistan infants - as compared to 10.2% for Australia prisoners of war of the Japanese in World War 2 (for which war crime Japanese generals were tried and hanged).

According to the Australian Institute of Criminology, in the year to mid-2007, 266 Australians were murdered, 65 people were killed by their intimate partner, and in those latter cases 43 per cent of the perpetrators has already come into contact with the police because of domestic violence (see: http://www.abc.net.au/am/content/2008/s2439564.htm ).

When women kill they do so at a much lower rates than men (who commit 85% of all homicides) and the vast majority kill family members, usually men who have battered them for years.

As many as 90% of the women in jail today in the US for killing men had been battered by those men (according to Allison Bass, "Women far less likely to kill than men; no one sure why," The Boston Globe, February 24, 1992, p. 27). Various US studies indicate as low as about 50% of homicides by women were associated with battering of the women by the victims (see: http://home.cybergrrl.com/dv/stat/statbwkill.html ).

Applying these US findings to Australia would suggest that about 40 of the 266 Australian homicides quoted above in the year to mid-2007 (Australia population 21 million) were by women and that at least 50% of these (20) were by battered women, yielding an "annual homicide rate" by battered women of 1 per million of population per year (murderers of batterers by battered women), similar to the "annual homicide rate" of Israelis by Gaza rockets and missiles over the last 8 years (0.5 per million of Israeli population per year).

According to Professor Paul Mazerolle of Griffith University's Violence Research and Prevention Program, 20 per cent of intimate partner homicides in Australia were committed by women. The Australian Institute of Criminology figures for 2005/06 indicated there were 74 intimate partner homicides. In 53 per cent of intimate partner homicides there was a known history of domestic violence. In a US study more than 75 per cent of women who had committed partner homicide claimed they were forced to have sexual intercourse with their husbands (see: http://womensphere.wordpress.com/2008/09/16/domestic-violence-leading-women-to-murder-says-australian-expert/ )

One estimate from this data that in 2005/2006 there were about 0.2 x 74 = 14.8 or 15 intimate partner homicides by women and of these 0.75 x 14.8 = 11.1 i.e about 11 had been subject to partner rape. Expressing this data from Australia (2005 population 20 million) as "annual homicide rate" we see it corresponds to 0.5 per million of population per year (murders of rapists by raped women), the same as the "annual death rate" of Israelis from Gaza rockets and mortars (0.5).

Around the world there are legislative moves to mitigate sentences or even reduce the charge of murder by battered females to one of manslaughter in recognition of what are called the "battered woman defence" and the "battered woman syndrome" (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battered_woman_defence ).

IN SUMMARY, the "annual homicide rate" in "deaths per million of population per year" is 0.5 (Israelis from Gaza missiles), the same as for Spousal Rapists at the hands of the Women they rape (0.5) and similar to that for Violent Spouses at the hands of the Women they batter (1.0).

Clearly Women should NOT murder their Spouses for ANY reason (except self defence) and nor should angry young Occupied Palestinian men fire missiles into the Occupying State of Israel (the more so because of the horrendously disproportionate Israeli reprisals death ratios that hugely exceed those of Nazi Germany).

Equally clearly Men should NOT batter or rape their wives and Apartheid Israel should STOP its illegal, highly abusive, mass imprisonment of Occupied Palestinians and STOP its horrendous active and passive mass murder of Occupied Palestinians (notably Occupied Palestinian CHILDREN) in egregious, war criminal violation of International Law.

Of course it is so obvious and fundamental that it is not even written down in major codes of human behaviour: "thou shalt not kill children" (see: Children of Lesser God. "Thou shalt not kill children" ).

Tim,

Israel needs to address the root causes of Hamas' rise to power, the roots of Hamas grow from seeds Israel planted.

    Terrible what's happening there, really.

Your data on sexual abuse of Anglo  children are interesting. I suggest you make a separate article devoted entirely to it. Same goes for violence against Anglo women--to correct the misconception that such happens primarily among Islamic cultures. I mean, everyone hurting women and children should be unmasked/made known.

    Clipped to Newsvine Feminists.

A fundamental point in all of this is Zionist LYING and the corresponding, complicit LYING by Omission of the racist, anti-Arab anti-Semitic, Islamophobic Western mainstream media and politicians.

Simple inspection of the statistics in the article show that the Israeli reprisals involving the killing of 880 Gazans and wounding 3, 620 (latest body count on Day 16 from INSIDE Gaza) is an utterly disproportionate response to (no doubt deplorable) TWENTY EIGHT (28) Israelis killed by Gaza rockets and mortars in the last 8.25 years since the starting of the Second Intifada by Occupied Palestinians in September 2000.

In order to deal with these crimes dispassionately one should treat them as "homicides" and can assess them comparatively in terms of "annual homicide rate".expressed as "deaths per million of population per year").

    880 deaths/16 days (Gaza population 1.5 million) = 880 deaths x 365 days /(16 days x 1.5 million) = 13,383 deaths per million of population per year.

    Palestinian violent and non-violent excess deaths from Israeli-imposed deprivation (Sep 2000- Jan 2009; average population 3.8 million) = 35,360 + 5,636 = 40,996; this corresponds to 40,996 deaths/(8.25 years x 3.8 million) = 1,308 deaths per million of population per year.

28 Israeli deaths from Gaza missiles/8.25 years (average Israel population in this period 6.7 million) = 28/8.25 years x 6.7 million) = 0.5 deaths per million of population per year (about the same as for "husband homicide by raped wives" and why Apartheid Israel should stop provoking such violence by continuing abusive Occupation and passive mass murder of 2,400 Occupied Palestinian children through deprivation EACH YEAR).

Israelis killed by Palestinians = 1,176 (Sep 2000-Dec 2008) + 9 (current violence, Day 16) = 1,185, this corresponding to 1,185/8.25 years x 3.8 million) =38 deaths per million of population per year - utterly deplorable but much less than the "annual homicide rate" in the US (56), for African Americans (200) or citizens of Detroit, Michigan, US (473).

The "Palestinians actively and passively killed by Israelis"/"Israelis killed by Palestinians" death ratio over the last 8.25 years is 1,308/38 = 34, 3.4 TIMED GREATER than the "reprisals death ratio" of TEN (10) ordered by Nazi leader Hitler and executed in the Ardeatine Massacre by the Nazis in Rome, Italy, March 1944.

Racist, pro-Zionist Western media will simply NOT report these realities - in particular the horrendous passive mass murder of Occupied Palestinians and Occupied Palestinian CHILDREN through war criminally-imposed DEPRIVATION - and blame the victims, the inmates (50% children and 75% women and children) in the Apartheid Israel-guarded Gaza Concentration Camp.

In comparison with Japanese war crimes in World War 2, the "annual death rate" is 1.6% for Occupied Palestinian Territory under-5 year old infants (3,000 deaths annually, 187,000 under-5 year old infants), 2.5% for Occupied Iraqi under-5 year old infants and 6.3% for under-5 year old Occupied Afghanistan infants - as compared to 10.2% for Australia prisoners of war of the Japanese in World War 2 (for which war crime Japanese generals were tried and hanged) (see: Palestinian-Israeli Death Ratios. Nazi-style Israeli Gaza War Crimes ).

I am always too late on finding this stuff, but I had been thinking about it. We allow gang members from Mexico and Central America into the country everyday. Aside from the deaths from meth and heroin and crack, The murder rate associated with these gang members and the drug cartels, is especially horrendous in black neighborhoods. Here black middle class/working class families are being pushed out by these racist gangs, just when they had started to pull themselves out of their own hell, is staggering.

But I don't see us saying ok, lets fire up the F-16s and bomb Mexico City or San Salvador. Not I am not saying that we are totally innocent in what has gone on south of our border, but at this point the class of those in power(like eric alpert likes to say) is really the issue.

The poor masses and the 1%ers. Mexico is being run by thugs who have more wealth than God, and they need a revolution, but in the meantime if you use the method of ratio and proportion while we should not do it , we would be much more justified at this point.

The situation is not at all comparable.

If it were Mexican government policy that the USA should be eliminated because the land it occupies is consecrated for Mexicans, and young Mexicans were taught from birth that their duty was to grow up and kill US citizens, and Mexico deliberately sent as many drug dealers as possible into the US to kill, maim, wreak havoc with US civilians, then you would have the beginnings of a comparison.

Israel is fighting a racist, uncompromising destructive ideology.

The Mexican situation, although clearly a problem, is about crime and border control.

    What hypocricy!!

The IDF's proud performance compared to the Rest of the World

Analysis of the Gaza operation compared to the Fallujah operation in Iraq and the NATO military operation in the former Yugoslavia

    Fallujah

Fallujah in Iraq is located about 40 miles west of Bagdad.

In 2004 its population was 200 to 300 thousand.

The town was controlled by fanatic Islamic forces answering to El Qaida, and was a base for numerous terrorist activities against the US forces.

The US Army decided to attack the city although the region was under a so called cease fire.

On 11/7/2004 the US army launched an attack on Fallujah with 3 battalions – population between 200 and 300 thousand.

(The IDF's operation in Gaza – population almost 2 million - also includes 3 battalions.)

The US army were going after about 3000 Islamic terrorists (The IDF is fighting about 18,000)

Two thirds of the population of Fallujah fled from the city at the beginning of the operation thus leaving only about 50 to 100 thousand inhabitants.

(The citizens of the Gaza strip comprise the most populated area in the world with almost 2M people who have nowhere to run to)

    .

At the end of the operation the reported results in Fallujah were as follows (Up-to-date results in Gaza added in brackets):

    6,000 civilian casualties ( Gaza = 1,100)

    1,000 Terrorists killed (Gaza = 420)

    10,000 (20%) houses destroyed (Gaza = 300 - about 3%)

    26,000 houses needing repair (Gaza = 1,000)

65 Mosques and 60 schools were destroyed. (Gaza 10 and 5)

The US army claimed that Mosques were used as ammunition stores and that schools harboured terrorists.

(The IDF has made similar claims)

77 US soldiers were killed in Fallujah

10 IDF soldiers have been killed in Gaza

The Fallujah operation was performed by the Marines and the 82nd airborne. These are Elite units of the US military.

The operation was advertised as one of the most successful ever performed by the US armed forces.

The "results" in Fallujah were far "better" than those in any other operation carried out elsewhere in the world (Algeria, Chechnia, Kosovo etc.)

    The former Yugoslavia:

In eleven weeks NATO air forces flew over 36,000 sorties and dropped over 23,000 bombs and missiles on the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia, Vojvodina, Kosovo, and Montenegro). These included 400 cruise missiles, cluster bombs, and highly toxic depleted uranium bombs.

Targets included the military forces, bases and equipment of the Serbian army. In addition the bombing damaged or destroyed 144 major industrial plants including all Yugoslavia's oil refineries, fuel storage facilities, car and motorcycle factories, pharmaceutical and fertiliser factories, rubber factories. The bombing of some of these released large quantities of dangerous chemicals into the environment, created an oil slick on the Danube 20 kilometres long, and put 600, 000 people out of work.

Damaged or destroyed were several thousand homes (mainly in Belgrade, Nis, Cuprija, Aleksinac and Pristina), 33 clinics and hospitals, 340 schools, 55 road and rail bridges. The River Danube was blocked; some of the bridges were hundreds of miles from the scenes of the racial expulsions and were vital trade links to the rest of Europe. Also attacked were 12 railway lines, 5 civilian airports, 6 trunk roads, 10 TV / radio stations and 24 transmitters; power stations were put out of action; sewage treatment plants were damaged; water supplies were cut off.

Five thousand civilians were injured; 1400 adult civilians were killed, 600 children were killed, 600 military and police personnel were killed. There are now 10,000 unexploded bombs scattered throughout the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Serbia is now the most polluted, damaged, distressed, politically unsettled, and poverty-stricken country in Europe. It is an humanitarian disaster area and has the highest UNHCR budget of any country in the world.

The strikes were carried out by high altitude bombing runs in order to safeguard the lives of the pilots.

How many operations against terrorists can you name where:

    1.    Civilians (and terrorists) were warned of military strikes?

    2.    The attacking force provided daily food and medical aid to citizens as well as to the terrorists being sheltered by them?

    3.    The attacking army arranged daily 3 hour ceasefires that enabled aid to be brought in while allowing terrorists to re-organise and even fire missiles?

    4.    The air force carries out close range precision bombing, often averting missiles at the last minute when civilians are spotted in the vicinity of military targets.

The IDF has proved that it is the best trained, best performing and most moral army by far!

After 8 years and over 10,000 missiles fired at our civilians and children.

After countless attempts to talk and achieve a peaceful agreement

After removing from Gaza any and all Israeli or Jewish presence let alone any "occupation"

After using all the means at our disposal before military means (including political pressure, and closing and blockading the border)

All this against an enemy :

    1.    That publicly declares its intention of killing all Jews and putting and destroying the state of Israel (See official Hamas charter and website)

    2.    Indoctrinates children to hate Jews and to exult in death and martyrdom achieved by killing Jews.

    3.    Uses children and women as human shields.

    4.    Uses its youth as suicide bombers against innocent civilian targets

    5.    Kills anyone amongst their own people who dares to speak out against them

We have nothing to apologize for.

    What would your country do?

Here's the thing, you're trying to use the classic children's excuse. "Look what the other kids did!" To which, of course, the standard adult reply is, "just because the other kids jump off a bridge, does that make alright for you to jump off a bridge?"

The Israeli's have committed many crimes and have much to answer for.

This is just one more attempt by zionist apologists to change the subject. That whole,"The rest of the world must  be anti-Israel since they aren't saying anything about Africa" ploy fell flat on it's face so they're back to the tried and true, spam and misdirection. Really, this post should be deleted.

"The Israeli's have committed many crimes and have much to answer for."

It's true that Israel has occasionally committed excesses, which certainly can't compete with the atrocities regularly committed by the Arabs (even those committed on their own brethren), but which may be considered reprehensible nonetheless.  However, that's what happens in war.  Look at your own countrys' history: millions of Japanese and German civilians roasted in WWII, a million dead Viet-Namese, probably hundreds of thousands of dead civilians in Iraq and Afganistan, Algeria, Kosovo, Chechnya, Jordan, Lebanon, ...... Do you really feel that you have the moral standing to be redressing Israel?  Are you aware that of all the long-standing conflicts in the world this is the one with the lowest relative mortality rate?  Are you aware that more Palestinians have been killed in Moslem countries every year than have been killed in the entire history of the conflict in which Israel is involved?

"just because the other kids jump off a bridge, does that make alright for you to jump off a bridge?"

No - it doesn't - but what choice does Israel have? Unless you suggest sitting back and letting children get blown up in schools and buses by religious fanatics who believe that killing Jews will get them to paradise.

Israel can choose not to be mass murders, Israel can choose not to practice collective punishment, Israel can choose to end apartheid.

    As for your second statement:

Unless you suggest sitting back and letting children get blown up in schools and buses by religious fanatics who believe that killing Jews will get them to paradise.

That is a typical straw man argument. No one ever suggests something like that except zionist apologists anxious to change the subject.

Iam not a zionist apologist - I am a proud Zionist and have nothing to apologise for.

Are you suggesting that the hundreds of innocents blown up in busses, shopping centers, streets etc in Israel ara figment of my imagination or that those who committed these attrocities were not fanatical moslems who were either coerced or brainwashed into believeing they would attain eternal paradise by killing Jews?

If a terrorist hides behind women and children and shoots at your children - what would you do? And when you fired back to protect your own and were accused of being a mass murderer because innocents were unfortunately killed - would you apologise?

Why the double standard? Why do you choose to ignore the 200,000 innocent civilians killed and 1 million displaced in Darfur, not to mention the hundreds of thousands of injured, disfigured, raped, and tortured - a tragic (but perfect) example of mass murder, ethnic cleansing and collective punisment - and point a finger at Israel - unless you have a particular agenda that is directed against Jews and Zionism?

To have such an agenda is perfectly legitimate, of course, but why hide behind accusations that do not hold water, are disproportionate and one sided?

You are most definitely a zionist apologist, and as I've said before, this transparent attempt to change the subject by accusing people of not 'really caring' about Darfur and other  trouble spots around the world is just the latest, and most feeble, of all the apologist attempts to change the subject.

    1. I am not changing the subject - just asking why you are using a double standard to "judge" what Israel is doing when, by comparing it to ANY other conflict you would arrive at the conclusion that although Israel is unfortunately killing innocent civilians (please note - I am not avoiding the issue) it's army is far more moral and it's military action far more proportionate than any other similar military action carried out anywhere. I am sure most Israelis would prefer the conflict solved by non military means but then, for that, Hamas has to do something it has refused to do - RECOGNIZE THE RIGHT OF ISRAEL TO EXIST.

    2. By saying that the hundreds of thousands of dead and the attrocities of Darfur are irrelevant on a forum discussing the military actions of one people against another then you are showing your bias and narrow mindedness. But then, maybe the suffering of civilians is not as important to you as bashing Israel.

    3. In case you did not notice, I have repeatedly stated the reason for the military action in Gaza. Does any sane person really believe there would be a military action at all if Hamas had not shelled innocent Israelis. The difference between Israel and the Hamas is that Hamas targets civilians and is sorry when they miss, while Israel targets terrorists and regrets every civilian casualty.

There is no 'double standard'. All govt's that commit the crimes that Israel is committing are guilty of war crimes, not just Israel

Darfur is not relevant to this discussion. Mentioning Darfur in this context is nothing more than a red herring. A naked and obvious attempt to divert attention from Israel's crimes.

This is no longer a 'military action' if it ever was. It's mass murder of innocents. Innocents already weakened by collective punishment.

    It's mass murder of innocents

Exactly, Wheel, which explains why Israel drops leaflets in arabic in residential areas:

Israel dropped leaflets on Gaza City on Saturday warning of a wider offensive.

"The IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) is not working against the people of Gaza but against Hamas and the terrorists only," the leaflets said in Arabic. "Stay safe by following our orders."

I'm sure the Nazis must have done something similar.

War between military with heavy weapons and civilians is Not a war

A nation or quasi-nation (eg Gaza, governed by Hamas) can start a war whether they are militarily outgunned or not.  They are fighting to destroy Israel. It's still a war and they do have weapons of the military kind - but they use the media too, with your help.

No Israeli is happy to see pictures of children being killed in Gaza. Were the Americans and British happy at seeing pictures of children killed in Berlin, Dresden and elsewhere in the fire-bombings? Probably not. Was anyone happy at seeing pictures of children hurt in Hiroshima or Nagasaki? Probably not.

But it was war. and if you wanted the Germans to stop killing your children at home, to stop killing your soldiers, to stop the murders in the concentration camps, you had to win the war. The way to win involved hitting the enemy as hard as possible. No-one doubted that civilians would be caught up in that effort. No one disputed that this involved collective punishment

Hamas perfected the "art" of suicide bombings and of targeting civilians. They perfected the "science" of collective punishment of the Israelis - wherever they live - in Israel, overseas - no Jewish Israeli is safe from Hamas - and only because he is Jewish. If Israel wants to stop the weekly attacks on buses, cafes, shopping malls and open markets, killing dozens of people at a time and wounding dozens more, including women, children and old people, if Israel wants to stop the daily bombings of it's civilians Israel has to hit Hamas hard.

Israel does not target children like Hamas does, but since Hamas shoots from behind children and use innocents as human shields, they cannot be given immunity from harm and neither can their human shields. If you want to call that collective punishment - go ahead.
